The Hate You Give discusses police brutality, racism, classism, drug dealing, amongst many other things, but is ultimately a story of perseverance, grief, childhood, and of course the differences between people as enforced by a system. The majority of the characters are well written and likable, or in some cases massively unlikeable, but still interesting to read and appropriately impacting the MC. The thought process of the MC (Starr) feels realistic: still a teenage mind, despite her grief and responsibility. Not the best book I've ever read, but enjoyable.
