One Last Gift by Emily Stone

I am frustrated. I understand narrative tension. I understand creating complications that will ultimately serve the story, but this author seems to have decided to complicate her narrative and then compound those complications just for the sake of it. She also selectively removed any instincts her two main characters would have in the modern age to text to avoid miscommunications. Pride as an excuse for not reaching out only goes so far. . .

This is more women's fiction than romance (the romantic principals spend far too much time apart and have romantic relationships with other people for most of the book, some of them significant)--and that's okay, but given the way it's all handled, I almost wish there was no romantic component at all.

The characterization is rich, the interpersonal exchanges are lush with details. It's all too detailed sometimes.

This was recommended by Audible when I searched for holiday-themed reads. This is not holiday reading.
