Tilt
by Emma Pattee
This book is really well done, I can’t personally connect with experiences like earthquakes or pregnancy yet I still connected deeply with Annie. The decision to frame the story as her talking to her unborn baby was original and it made the whole thing feel like I was listening to someone’s private self-talk.
There are scenes in here always feel real, never forced. The pacing struck a perfect balance and the way the flashbacks intertwined with the present heightened both the tension and the emotional depth. It’s speculative fiction, yes, but the speculative elements almost took a back seat to the emotional weight of the story. For me, it was less about “the big what if” and more about the insight into a single person’s life and inner world.
A thoughtful, moving read that lingers.
