Maybe Next Time by Cesca Major

2.0

In “Maybe Next Time”, the protagonist Emma is forced to relive the same tragic day over and over in the hopes that she can learn to let go of the noise and remember the people and things that bring her true joy. While the premise is a great one and the beginning starts off promising, I think the story goes off track the further one gets into the story.

I struggled to relate with Emma the more I read, partly because I think the story was dragged out longer than it needed to be. The first few days kept my attention before things started to get repetitive, and it snowballed from there. Emma ends up reliving the same day for months, and instead of learning from each day, she gives up for a long time and does not really interact with the world. She leaves her friends and family during some of the toughest parts of their lives because it’s hard, and for me that made her unlikeable.

The ending on this book is a bit of a cliffhanger, with the reader left inserting what they think happens…and I actually liked that ending. I do think there is a bit of redemption at the end, but to me it came too late for me to love this book.
