The Price We Paid: The Extraordinary Story of the Willie and Martin Handcart Pioneers by Andrew D. Olsen

5.0

This book is incredible. The author did an amazing job of making the facts of what actually happened flow so that I didn't feel like I was just reading a textbook. I learned A LOT about the Willie and Martin handcart companies. Once again, the author did thorough research on all the people involved in both parties, and he went into detail about what happened to each person after they arrived in Salt Lake. It was really humbling to read the immigrants first hand accounts of what it was like on the trek, and a lot of them continued to have hardships after they arrived in the valley. It was amazing to read about their faith throughout not only the trying times on the trek, but even when life wasn't perfect in Zion like they had hoped, they still trusted in God and knew that all things were for their good. I learned a lot not only about the trek, but also about how I view my own life and it helped me put things in perspective. I would recommend this book to anyone.
