ellaroshea 's review for:
Beloved
by Toni Morrison
the language is just stunning. some passages I want to cut out and keep close like a tiny secret clenched fist of a jewel. I adore how this is a neo-slave narrative that is post-enslavement and explores how this affects life. it's complex and nuanced and gorgeous. sometimes it does postmodernism a bit too close to the sun for me to be able to understand what is going on but that's really my only criticism.
Graphic: Child death, Gore, Mental illness, Racial slurs, Racism, Slavery, Violence, Blood, Murder
Moderate: Sexual assault, Sexual violence
Graphic and gory description of infanticide a few times throughout the book (including fairly near the beginning)
