Master & Apprentice by Claudia Gray
4.0

A fun gateway into an unexplored relationship

Due to Qui-Gon's fate in Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace, we were barely able to see his and Obi-Wan's relationship dampening the emotional impact of Jinn's fate. However, Claudia Gray does a great job filling in those gaps here with a story that takes place around eight years before the first prequel.

Detailing a mission that the two are on to assist an old friend of Qui-Gon's, fellow Jedi (and original apprentice of Count Dooku) Rael Averross, and some fascinating backstory is added to both prequel characters. We see flashbacks throughout the book to Qui-Gon's padawan days being fascinated by the prophecies that would lead him to his dying wish. We see Obi-Wan who is much more adherent to the Jedi code and the rule of the council be at odds with his master for his more flexible approach. And we see Qui-Gon struggle with being a mentor, believing in himself and the Jedi Council.

However, the real standout here is Rael Averross. The first padawan of Dooku, and the complete antithesis of him, he is a fascinating character with a backstory. I want to delve into even further and would love to see him become the next Ahsoka Tano and show up in future works.

Lastly are the jewel thieves, Rahara and Pax. What I struggled with is that I adored these characters but found them largely tangential to the main story. I would love an entire book on them as the chemistry between them was endearing and begged to be further explored.

I highly recommend Master and Apprentice for any Star Wars fan out there. It's a nice self-contained story that will further your appreciation of the Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon relationship when rewatching Episode 1.
