The Mill on the Floss by George Eliot

4.0

The Mill on the Floss by George Eliot tells the story of Tom and Maggie Tulliver whose father owns a mill on the River Floss.

This book is melodramatic along the lines of a Thomas Hardy novel. There are many beautiful and moving passages, almost like asides in a play where George Eliot made social comments and lessons about human nature, love, and life in general. Very nicely written.

The main theme I pulled from this was family relationships - specifically the sibling relationship between Tom and Maggie. They each had their faults, but they were true and devoted to each other until the end.

I really enjoyed this book throughout, although it did get long-winded toward the end with Maggie’s struggles in finding love. The ending of the story was cruel irony.

4 stars. I enjoyed this so much I plan to go back and revisit what I missed in Middlemarch. I wish I had read this Eliot novel first because Middlemarch had put kind of a bad taste in my mouth. Now I understand what all the fuss is about with George Eliot!
