The Chalice of the Gods by Rick Riordan

3.75

Percy is forced to complete three quests for three gods to acquire three letters of recommendation necessary to get into New Rome College. Apparently, saving the world more than once still isn’t a good enough character recommendation.

“A chance to do quests? Just the three of us? Just like old times? The three musketeers!”
“The Power Puff girls!” Annabeth suggested.
“Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey!” I said.

This felt more cozy compared to the high stakes of saving the world. It felt more like trying to save Percy’s sanity.

I forgot how much I missed Percy’s snarky voice and Rick’s amazing chapter titles! This had me giggling out-loud numerous times and was just filled with nostalgia and quips that threw me back to my preteens when I binged Percy Jackson.
Despite being an adult, Riordan perfectly captures the young adult voice and thoughts that many people at that age have.

I am a guy of limited talents. If I can't kill it with water, a sword, or sarcasm, I am basically defenseless.

Occasionally, I was frustrated by how many throwbacks and reminders Riordan included, as if they were Easter Eggs but were more like mini recaps. Remember the time we almost died in this book? Remember the dam? Remember the snakes? It started to feel forced and annoying, slowing the pace of the story.

I also do feel this was an especially Percy-focused book. I know he is the protagonist, but other books saw development in side characters and I felt Annabeth and Grover had reverted back to the flatter support caricatures they were from all the way back in The Lightening Thief.

I am always skeptical of authors who return to their worlds to try and capitalise on reader’s love, however, Riordan pulled it off extremely well!
