The Wolf King

Thank you Lauren Palphreyman and Simon Maverick for the free gift!
This was an addictive start to what promises to be a gripping romantasy series. With heavy Scottish vibes and a classic enemies-to-lovers arc, The Wolf King is a moody, atmospheric tale of political unrest, forbidden attraction, and werewolf lore.
Princess Aurora is a headstrong heroine who finds herself caught between duty and desire. Her impulsive act of mercy—sparing a young wolf’s life—sets off a chain of events that leads to her kidnapping by a ruthless alpha and lands her in the heart of werewolf territory. While the setup flirts with familiar tropes, Palphreyman breathes new life into them with rich worldbuilding and solid emotional stakes.
I really enjoyed this take on shifter dynamics, especially the way the different clans were handled and how the slow-burn romance unfolded. The relationship had depth and development—no instant love here, just simmering tension and reluctant trust. The romance grows from mutual challenge, not just forced proximity.
The audiobook was a standout. Zara Hampton-Brown’s narration gave Aurora strength and vulnerability in equal measure, and Shane East delivered the perfect amount of broody alpha energy. The duet narration format was a huge bonus—it added an immersive, cinematic quality that elevated the entire experience.
If you like your fantasy romances full of wild landscapes, shifting alliances, and a wolfish hero you can’t help but root for, this one’s worth a listen. I’m definitely excited to see where this series goes next.
