Anne of Windy Poplars by L.M. Montgomery
4.0

Another sterling entry in the Anne series. This one is a tad controversial and not beloved by all because of the letter format...roughly half of the book or so is comprised of Anne's love letters (with the good bits excised!) to Gilbert. This is a bold choice, but I kind of adore it, partly because I just love Anne's voice in the letters - delightful, humorous and beautiful all at the same time. And the story told in this one is a fun one - how will Anne cope teaching for 3 years in a town where no one knows or loves her?? Well, as one can guess, she copes just fine. And yes, eventually everyone does know her and she is adored by all. It does make you roll your eyes at times, how quickly and easily she wins everyone over and solves everyone's problems, but I'm willing to put up with that just because this story is so well told. And Anne is not invincible! There is a section where Anne with good intentions meddles in a young couple's love life to hilarious effect. So Anne can be beaten and is humble enough to admit it! All in all, despite the sometimes overly treacly tone, this book still is wonderful and I delighted on reading it as I sat on my couch in the sweltering summer heat and imagined long autumnal walks in PEI...
