“Mercy is only for the secure.”

I really enjoyed this second installment of the Magic of the Lost trilogy. This series is technically a fantasy but it just feels like it could actually happen in history. The main characters are so freaking messy and that didn't change in this book. However, we did get to see a different part of them. I love that there is an element of a love story because I'm a sucker for a love story. However, this love story is such a mess. The politics and espionage make their relationship so complicated. I loved that we got to see a different perspective of the political conflict from the first novel. I, especially, liked the addition of some of the side characters.

I still find Touraine and Luca infuriating but in a charming way, I think. They make the stupidest decisions constantly and then are surprised when people are pissed at them. Like come on, guys. Get it together. However, they are the driving force for all of the action so at least they keep things interesting. I can't wait for the third book. I'm so excited to see how this trilogy wraps up.
