The Body Is Not an Apology: The Power of Radical Self-Love by Sonya Renee Taylor

hopeful informative inspiring reflective medium-paced

5.0

"Her belly was an alter of flesh, built in remembrance of us, by us."

This book is not a self-help, body positivity guide. Sonya Renee Taylor is speaking to how all bodies deserve respect; black, indigenous, fat, balding, disabled, gay etc. She is showing up for those without "Radical Self-Love", describing in detail how we maintain systems of oppression by being bystanders. Love thyself, so you can accept others, so you can bring the change in the world we so desperately need.

Listening to the audio version, I was constantly wishing I had the physical copy to annotate and highlight and bookmark everything. I sat down and typed out most of the audio clips I had saved. Hearing the well researched information and the passion Sonya Renee Taylor had while narrating, I became invested to learn more about how I can become a better ally to those bodies who do not fit society norms.

Sonya Renee Taylor's introduction of body terrorism is another mind opening term. ".. violence associated with body hatred is widespread and horrific" - https://thebodyisnotanapology.com/about-tbinaa/what-is-body-terrorism/

The idea that humans can hate each other based on fear of the unknown is not a new concept, I just have hope that more people can search within themselves to accept not knowing.

"The luxury of not having to think about one's body, always comes at another bodies expense."

I can confidently say that I would recommend this book to those looking for more guidance in to the current issues that face our societies, and urge those who think they know what they believe to step outside comfort zones and pick this up.
