Audition by Ryū Murakami
3.0
"Audition" follows Aoyama, a documentary film maker who lost his wife seven years ago. In an effort to get back out there, his friend convinces him to hold auditions for a new wife on the pretense of casting a new film. When Aoyama sees one woman's resume, it's love at first sight. But his new love has a mysterious past, one Aoyama is too blinded by love to see until it's too late...
I read Murakami's "In the Miso Soup" about a month ago and could not put it down. I almost fell off my train platform walking and trying to read the last ten pages at the same time lol. So I immediately went and requested the rest of his books from the library.
Unfortunately, this one was less successful for me. Aoyama isn't a particularly sympathetic character and events escalate very, very quickly with an abrupt conclusion. Despite that, I enjoyed the build-up to the big reveal, so I'm giving this one three stars.
You'll like this if you like a fast-paced thriller and are okay with a little bit of gore!
