The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros

3.0

[Read for a Child/YA Lit class]

The story of Esperanza Cordero and her life growing up on Mango street.

This book deals with a lot of relevant struggles and fears that young girls face growing up. It deals with some darker themes though they are not super explicit. The book is written in an almost journal like style, like we’re reading pages out of Esperanza’s diary, with very short chapters dealing with specific events. The author’s style in this book is very poetic and beautiful with a lot of nice prose. It’s a good coming of age story that a lot of women and girls will be able to relate to in some way.

It is written in first person, but as always, that’s just a personal preference of mine and a minor gripe on my part.

Would recommend it, though maybe not for very young readers.
