Though I enjoyed this book pretty well, I was still a bit underwhelmed. I have read so many dystopians lately that they all are running together, and that is definitely not a good thing in a genre that should promote creativity and new plotlines. Instead it is the same story about a teen who is being forced into doing something, but instead decides to buck the system and act independently. It can be a formula for high drama, but it can also feel like you are reading the same story over and over just with different character names. And there is always a predictable love triangle where the girl will almost always pick the boy that she "shouldn't."
Cassia is a standard likable character. The main thing that stood out for me that made her unique was her sorting ability. That was something new and interesting in this story. Poor Xander doesn't really stand a chance and gets very little screen time, but perhaps he will make a comeback in book two and there will actually be a more equal triangle. Ky is the outcast who is irresistible to Cassia and opens her eyes to some of the things going on and to *gasp* cursive. I had to laugh when I realized that Cassia was totally losing it over something so pointless.
The uprising is surely coming, but there weren't really a lot of hints about it yet in this novel. Ky will certainly be back and leading the charge, and I will be along for the ride.
