Why Nations Fail: The Origins of Power, Prosperity, and Poverty
by Daron Acemoğlu, James A. Robinson
This book makes a convincing argument refuting geographic & bad economic policy explantations for why nations succeed & fail and instead argues that it mainly comes down to whether the nations have "extractive" or "inclusive" political institutions as these naturally lead to "extractive" or "inclusive" political institutions.
It goes through several examples of countries and how their political institutions were crucial in whether these nations succeeded or failed. Definitely an illuminating read & a good reminder why authoritarian governments are always really, really bad.
