Unlike Becoming, which I roared through, Light took me a little longer. I bought it at over our trip to JLH's mom's memorial service in CT, January '23, and just finished it now. Because it's more of a "how to" than a memoir, I found it easy to dip into and out of the essays and chapters, but I also didn't feel a strong narrative push. Now that I've finished it, however, I'm thinking I might go back and listen to it (as I did for Becoming) or reread it. Michelle Obama has a lot to say, and she says it powerfully, clearly, and effectively. She blends philosophy with example, humor with urgency, and humility with experience. She is, as my book group friends and I have been agreeing, able to offer both sides of so many of the truths of our lives: yes, we need to keep going, AND we need to rest so we don't burn out. Yes, it's unfair that being a "first" is so demanding, AND the firsts need to consider the nexts as they move through their lives. In a time when sound bytes rule, her ability to set out the whole equation, to follow a statement or idea to its logical conclusion, is refreshing and important. I've dogeared a bazillion pages.

I'm already planning to share her sections on friendship and relationships with my students because she captures so many important concepts clearly and humanely.

If you're feeling hopeless and ineffective, I'd suggest this book, and if you're an empowered changemaker, I'd suggest it as well! Read or listen to this one! You'll be glad you did.
