love. the topics of each essay were entirely unique, having been spun like gold in her mind throughout many years. tolentino felt like a friend, or just the stranger you end up chatting with, sharing stories and little human moments together. jia owned these subjects, holding herself accountable for living in the weirdest parts of the 21st century. her way of telling these stories, allowing them to slip away from her into something more personal and unrestricted than any other essay collection i’ve read. ultimately, i didn’t feel as if i learned any new ideas from jia, instead gaining this somewhat satirical, almost laughable perspective on late stage capitalism. i would read her shopping lists if she asked
