The question isn't Was this compelling? or Did I enjoy the characters? or Does it have a great ending? or Were the conflicts character-driven? All of those are a resounding YES. In fact, I read this nearly straight through. It should have five stars, certainly more than four. Holding back that fifth star hurts a little. But it has to do with the visceral feel. Had the author shown me more than she did what Francis felt, rather than telling me, this would be a solid five star story. That she wrote it so well I could hardly stop reading despite that? Is amazing.
