Ruthless Creatures by J.T. Geissinger
2.0

Had potential, but didn’t deliver for me.

I really wanted to love Ruthless Creatures. The premise was intriguing—a woman mourning her fiancé’s mysterious disappearance and a dark, enigmatic stranger entering her life? Sign me up. Unfortunately, the execution just didn’t work for me.

The biggest issue was the pacing. The story felt slow and drawn out in the beginning, but then suddenly rushed when the romance started to pick up. The relationship felt more insta-lust than believable connection, and while I don’t mind spice in a dark romance, I struggled to connect with the characters emotionally.

Nat (the main character) had some witty moments, but her reactions sometimes felt inconsistent. And while Kage was meant to be the brooding, dangerous love interest, his development felt shallow. There was a lot of telling rather than showing when it came to his depth and backstory.

Also, some of the dialogue felt a bit cringey and over-the-top. I found myself rolling my eyes instead of being drawn into the tension. It had all the ingredients of a gripping, angsty romance, but it just didn’t click for me.

What I did like:
• The female friendships were genuinely sweet.
• Some emotional scenes had real promise.
• The idea behind the plot is interesting—it just didn’t fully land.

For me, it lacked the emotional depth and natural flow I look for in a dark romance.
