A Dance with Dragons 1: Dreams and Dust by George R.R. Martin

3.0

This is more than a three star rating, honestly, but for me it wasn't quite a four. I'm still unsure as to where exactly I would rate this, so maybe I'll get back to it. This one was much better than A Feast for Crows and with many more interesting characters, but I still maintain that they would have been better books if the characters had been mixed together and it made into two parts with maybe the second part of this book by itself as its own separate installment, but I'll see if I feel the same after I read it.

For some reason, I haven't been enjoying Martin's writing style as much as I did when I read the first three books, but this one read much better than the last. Or maybe these characters are just more interesting, I don't know. The point is that this one was much easier to read than the last. And like I said, full of the more interesting and less annoying characters.

I also appreciate how Martin ended this one. I'm (obviously) reading A Dance with Dragons in two parts, rather than the combined one that you used to be able to get but I couldn't find anywhere to buy. I also read A Storm of Swords in two parts, and part one ended so abruptly that I couldn't not continue because it felt as if someone had literally just sliced the book down the middle instead of finding a good, comfortable place to end it. This wasn't the case in ADWD. The ending was very natural and a good cliffhanger-esque place to stop.

I don't think my heart was fully in this after being so disappointed with AFFC, so maybe if I hadn't still been so pissed off with Brienne and gone into this book with a more open and anger-free mind I would have enjoyed this more. There were a few plot points that I didn't enjoy so much, but seeing everything finally start to weave together, at least as far as Dany is concerned, was really enjoyable to read about. I think I'll definitely enjoy part two more and I'm looking forward to continuing on with this series again.
