The Waves Take You Home by María Alejandra Barrios Vélez
5.0

This book really made me emotional!!
On all types of levels. Culturally I could relate to Vi, and I loved how the book painted a beautiful story of Colombia and its roots. It touched on realities for families who live abroad and the guilt lit gives their children who learn to assimilate. I’m really glad Vi never used Liam just to keep Caminito afloat. The best part of the book for me was how she read her Abuelas diary and it was if they were conversing back and forth. I wish she found out the information about her grandmas love life had she been alive because I feel like things would’ve played out completely different. But much like the book, that’s just how life is sometimes. We don’t get to choose our story, except VI’s grandmas did sort of dictate the love story for Rafa and Vi by sending her to school in New York. In the end I’m glad Vi found her way back to Rafa and Camanito ended up being able to stay in business, good ending all around.
