First: this cover for the novel Big Swiss is one of the greatest I’ve ever seen! It’s a painting called “Woman Falling” by Anna Weyant and designed by Jaya Miceli.
Second: while I read the synopsis a few times, I was still so unprepared for the ride that was Big Swiss. To quote a fellow GoodReads reviewer, it did feel at times it went off the rails!! I'm also not surprised that its lead Greta has been described as unlikable. Sure, she's unfriendly and a kind of bitch. But those aren't the issues here. Greta is just…you don’t know with her. What makes her unlikable is often her lack of accountability because we're with her throughout the book, making us aware of her inner thoughts and I felt like rarely looked within and went damn that was kind of shitty. She just shrugs it off. She’s also content with her life’s unremarkable-ness by the time you meet her which for me was annoying. At least in this setting. Yet at the same time, Greta is vulnerable, selfish, unsure, and nonchalant. So she's to the contrary...relatable??
Listening to this audiobook also added to the experience! I found Big Swiss at times to be hilarious! Greta works as a transcriber for a sex therapist, and author Jen Beagin had a lot of fun with this field of work when it came to the patients and their dialogue with Om, the therapist. (My only complaint with the audio was Big Swiss', the actual character's, accent. Way too cartoonish and heavy on the stereotypes).
Big Swiss also unexpectedly touched on the matter of identity; when it comes to what we do for work, out of passion, our calling or simply for the green. In addition to sexual and gender identity. And of course, parent issues. Specifically mother issues. The book is a lot and for as much buzz as it continues to receive, can be quite polarizing. But it was a trip.
