The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers

3.75

i'm not usually a "cozier" scifi reader, and this definitely leans into the hipster-millennial side of the genre, but i had a really good time with this
it dances on the blurry border between mass effect and (tales from the) borderlands, with really fascinating galaxy building and expanses of species and cultures. there could be much better ways to handle a lot of it (pronouns; the one racist guy on the ship) but this could be a decent introduction into queer(-er) scifi stories. i trust in the author to have improved on this since then.
i didn't feel too close with any of the cast members overall (save for ashby ? i felt for him i did) but there were many undeniable moments of emotion and evocation from each individual. there was so much care put into this crew.
