I enjoyed this book more than I expected to, but I did find the multiple timelines very confusing, as the stories didn't just move back and forth between present day (1980s) and the earlier story but also back and forth in various times from the early 1900s onward. I think there was probably some intricate storytelling through these multiple timelines, as details would be revealed first and then the backstory was shared, but I found it too hard to follow along. The racial language was also hard to handle, although it was accurate for the time period being depicted. On the positive side, the characters were interesting along with the community they created.
Graphic: Racial slurs, Racism
Moderate: Domestic abuse, Terminal illness, Murder, Injury/Injury detail
