It feels like it’s been so long since I’ve read a proper fantasy and I loved this one. As this is the first in a new series it does take a bit setting things up and it took a while to warm up to the characters.
I started out liking Veronyka, idk if it was because we saw her POV most frequently or what but I loved her relationship with her Phoenix she ends up hatching Xephrya and I was just devastated about something that happened so I really felt for her and felt invested in this journey she goes on throughout the book. I warmed up to Tristan as the book went on and once again idk if that was because Veronyka and his storylines converged or what but I liked seeing them develop a friendship (possible romance??) and Tristan and his relationship with his Phoenix Rex is probably the most prominent one we saw throughout the book so it was interesting to really delve into it with them. Now Sev I still have some warming up to do, he didn’t get the Veronyka treatment with me despite crossing paths and intermingling with the other storylines but I think next book I’ll be more interested in him.
I thought the idea of Phoenix Riders was really cool and also just kind of blew my mind that these things are huge and they ride them. Like I’m always picturing these little phoenixes but no they’re like horse sized or bigger. I thought the use of them in the story was interesting.
There is a storyline I’m interested to see play out. I’m curious if it’ll take a villainous route or if there is some kind of redemption arc.
