I've been rereading the books with my 8-year-old, and this is the one that nearly broke us. It's funny, because this is the one that broke us when I was reading them with my older kid when he was around the same age. (He later read them all on his own.) There's a great story in here, and Dolores Umbridge gets my vote for best villain in the series, but the book is too long. When this book first came out, the Harry Potter business was making so much money that I'm sure no one wanted to tell Rowling she needed to trim it back. Two decades later, I feel like the book could have easily lost 200 pages or more, and that would have made it better.
