Black Clover, Vol. 4 by Yûki Tabata

5.0

Me learning more about Fuegoleon: OMG, I love this character! He's so awesome and strong and cool and fatherly and I LOVE HIM!!!

Me after a finishing the volume: FOR FUCK'S SAKE, TABATA, WHY AM I NOT ALLOWED TO HAVE NICE THINGS?! WHY?!?!?!?!

But in all seriousness, this was a great volume mostly because, once again, the characters and the fights were AMAZING. While I still don't like much of the higher-up magic knights, it was super cool seeing their magic in action. They may be one-dimensional assholes for now, but at least they can put their money where their mouth is for the most part.

I have to say, I hold a lot of respect for Yuno. It would have been so easy for Tabata to have him focus more on competing with the nobles rather than Asta, but seeing him still recognize Asta as his one true rival and put all of his effort into becoming stronger to surpass Asta is awesome. Also, him acknowledging that while he put in an intense amount of effort to get stronger, he still needs Asta's help shows what a mature, self-aware kid he is.

On a completely unrelated topic, Charmy is fucking amazing and speaks to me on a personal level. I honestly hope she gets more screen time because her magic is so fucking interesting and I want to see more of it and how she uses it. Oh, and Leopold is loud and hilarious and I fucking love him. Love my little lion cub.

However, if there's one complaint I have to lodge, it's that the villains are easily the most cliched and uninteresting bad guys I've seen in awhile. Look, I get that everyone and every thing in this series is cliched, but at least I can find some positives to negate that. Here, the only positive I can give is that their magic is really cool. That's it. While I want to feel sorry for Rades for what he went through, it's damn near impossible for me to do so when all he does is so over the top evil. Also Asta and Fuegoleon pretty much shut him down from the start, so yeah, a tragic backstory's not gonna make up for all the bullshit he's done.

Despite that, I'm more curious about the Eye of the Midnight Sun and their motivations as well as their reasons for wanting to destroy the clover kingdom. Hopefully they make up for the terrible villains introduced so far. Anyways, this was a great volume and I had a blast. Can't wait to see where that cliffhanger goes!
