I stayed up into the wee hours of the morning to finish this because I NEEDED to know what happened (
and I needed there to be justice!!!!!
). This book is such a gem for several reasons. I loved that one of our main characters, Hester, was 50, and we got to hear her opinions and perspectives on what was happening as doom comes to her doorstep with an innocent disguise. Hester and her friends are an absolute hoot and their interactions were so genuine and real. The story itself is very dark and I would definitely check those content warnings before reading. That being said, I liked that it didn’t shy away from heavy topics and sometimes just straight up horror
the way Falada was described was disgustingly disturbing in the best way, the entire time I felt like someone was showing me the nastiest most unnatural bug, it was PERFECT. Especially since horses are typically supposed to be graceful and a symbol of freedom, ugh absolutely perfect!
. Cordelia, our 14 year old protagonist, has had a rough go at life since she has lived under her mother’s thumb the entire time. Watching her grow and transform, even becoming brave when she thinks she isn’t, was such a joy. I highly recommend this book. The audio edition was excellent too and the narrators did a spectacular job!
