Dead Voices by Katherine Arden

5.0

This spooky middle-grade series so great! I loved Small Spaces, and while I liked that one better than Dead Voices, Dead Voices still did a fantastic job of telling a spooky, short story with memorable plotting, solid emotional character beats and a truly incredible setting. (Complete with The Shining vibes!) I realized while reading it that each book of the quartet takes place in a single season, which is something that - as a person who deeply appreciates seasons - absolutely delightful.

This one takes place in winter, and man...IS IT EVER WINTERY.

Already excited for the summer book, Dark Waters. For middle-grade readers seeking to be creeped out but not scared, this is a perfect choice.
