Batman: Nightwalker
by Marie Lu
2.4/5
A Batman book with absolutely no Batman vibe in it. Super OK. I was in a very Batman mood and decided to pick this up.
Pros:
- The scene where Bruce breaks into the stronghold with Diana was fun, gripping and really make me like all the characters.
- Bruce's friends and their relationship with Bruce were great. They each had their complexities and backstories and were likable. I also liked the cop character, and, of course. ALFRED.
- I enjoyed reading this, so can say that the writing was really addictive and good. I haven't read a Marie Lu book before (still haven't progressed much in Warcross) but can definitely see why she's such a popular YA writer.
Cons:
- I went into this hoping for an enemies-to-lovers kind of romance, and it kind of was. But it wasn't. Because it was, instead, an instant-fascination kind of generic YA romance, with a predictable ending. The romance pretty much dictated the entire plot, which wasn't what I was hoping for going into a super-hero story.
- Bruce just wasn't Batman. He doesn't feel like Batman in the least, and he doesn't feel like he will become Batman. I mean, he is a heroic, vigilante kind of guy, but I feel that that isn't what makes Batman so special as a hero.
Batman is his deep angst, his darkness, his willingness to destroy his own image to serve the greater good. Batman doesn't see himself as a hero, he just sees himself as a guy doing what is needed because no one else can. Batman is an antihero in personality, but his complete opposition to murder makes him a complete, self-sacrificing good guy at heart. But he struggles with his own darkness, yet strives to protect a city which is quite frankly a complete trash heap.
Bruce in this book was just a decent, nice hero type. I like that he was a naive teen (because in this book, he is), but he had close to 0% of Batman in the making in him. It made the book a little boring.
- The story was way too short and under-developed, imo. The plot was dictated mostly through conversations in the jail, then a few cool actions scenes, then the climax with a pretty lackluster villain.
Overall, a well written but supremely average superhero book. It had fun bits, but I recently watched the Batman movies, and this just felt a little empty compared to those. Would recommend for those who like a cute YA romance with fun action and hero themes.
