The Butcher and the Wren by Alaina Urquhart
3.0
dark emotional tense fast-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Character
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: No
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

For a group of people that are trying to save the public from a serial killer, they do not seem very concerned about actually informing the public about what is going on and it kind of drove me nuts.

That being said, the character of Wren I did fine to be a little bit too much. She would go off on these weird thought processes and that would have nothing to do with the case and then all of a sudden she was back on the case like it was the most important thing in the world.

it was very weird that she got so caught up in this game of cat and mouse with this serial killer. To the point where you're kind of just hoping she walks away and lets somebody else take over because clearly she cannot think straight.

And then you have the butcher. I will admit it was kind of interesting to read his chapters because it goes from this very normal seeming person to the most messed up inner monologue you could possibly think of which is to be expected in the mind of a serial killer.

I do know that there is a second living in a series, but I don't know that I would ever read it because I'm just not invested in something that's supposed to be so high stakes.
