The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank

challenging emotional reflective sad slow-paced

3.75

It's so, so difficult to rate this one. Throughout the diary, you really get to know Anne. Her insights, her thoughts, experiences, worries, passions. Though it is a diary - there are long stretches where not much of interest is to be reported, and it can be kind of difficult to get through. But she paints a thorough picture of the daily life in the Annex. She wanted to be a writer, and to "go on living after [her] death". This made me feel so bittersweet. Her wish was granted, but at what cost?

The afterword absolutely gutted me. I'm sure there's nothing I can say about that period of time that hasn't been said. It's just absolutely shattering to spend hours with this wonderful young lady just to have her ripped away like that.

...if only there were no other people in the world.
