Men, Women, and Chainsaws by Stephen Graham Jones

3.0

Read as part of my challenge to read the Short Story, Novelette, Novella and Novel: Adult shortlists for the 2023 Ignyte Awards.

I adore Stephen Graham Jones's Lake Witch Trilogy so I was excited to pick up a novella from him. Like a lot of his work, "Men, Women, and Chainsaws" tips its hat to slashers and, at its heart, is the story of a heartbroken young woman who decides to carry out her revenge against her ex-boyfriend with the help of a supernatural car when he returns to their hometown.

I enjoyed it, but I think it says a lot that it's left me with not an awful lot to say about it. Jenna's easy to like and root for and the whole story has a retro charm that will appeal to fans of slashers from the '70s and '80s. In all honesty, though, I might have enjoyed this story more if I cared at all about cars...
