Talk Flirty to Me by Livy Hart

Did not finish book. Stopped at 31%.
I’m going to DNF this one at 31%. Spoilers up to that point possible!

This didn’t work for me… it was too chaotic and there was too much going on for me to stay focused.

I started off pretty invested in this. It’s an interesting concept and I liked the voice actor / firefighter duo! But I don’t like the whole “he’s running for mayor and wants her mom to endorse him” deal. It’s so sus and I hate it. I know it’s out in the open now but it’s still really creepy? Like … did he wait seven years to get together with Caleb too because of this??? Does edge actually even like Caleb?? And in the seven years these two weren’t friends… did they not make new friends????? How do you go 7 years without friends????

Then there’s the mother who has 10 kids with an 11th on the way and that’s why the FMC is home. It… feels weird in the 2020’s to have this plot. I could have gotten the same feel with 5-6 kids. She has 4yo twins and never spends time with them? At least not from what I’ve seen. Is she a mom or a baby maker? It’s weird and frustrating and I didn’t like it bc it felt icky. Even the FMC was being rude about her mom “she knows less about technology than she does birth control” - implying that her mom doesn’t even want these babies. She just doesn’t want medication / surgery to stop her from having them.

Let’s go back to Caleb who is now a wrench in the relationship because he’s being kind of a butt? He didn’t care about his friend for 7 years but then makes him the godfather of his kid??? If you really cared about your friend, you’d try to make amends???? It goes both ways of course. It just feels icky that they’re so close now but we don’t get any indication how they got back together. It’s weird??

So this brings me to my final point: for the first like 20% of this book, the FMC kept arguing that her job was so complex and not just anyone can be a voice actor and how it means so much more than just talking…..
And then…..
They get a 3 book deal when he has 3 DAYS of practice for this audition. What?????????

And that is where I drew the line. If she hadn’t made a big deal about her job then I could have gotten past it. But she made such a big deal and then the author mooted the point by this decision. I didn’t like that at all. It feels again… icky.

I have one more of this author’s books and I’m going to give it a shot since I own it but I won’t have my hopes up.
