This book wasn’t at all what I was expecting. It’s marketed as a thriller, but I would consider it more of a family drama. I think I would have enjoyed this book had I wanted to read an emotional drama, but I kept thinking to myself, when is someone going to get murdered?! (Answer: never.)
There are several twists in the story, but again, they are relationship-based. I can see how this book would have mass appeal to readers who want to read about family dynamics and complicated histories, but I just wasn’t the right reader for this book, and my expectations were not set appropriately. Why this book is being touted as a thriller is beyond me. Yes, there is a mystery, but it’s not suspenseful or tense.
It was an easy read told from two POVs. Leo’s chapters made me laugh out loud several times - I loved that character’s wit and dry observations. Other than that, this book didn’t keep my attention, and I don’t know that I would have finished it had it not been the June book club selection for @livelaughmurder! (But again, no murders. Womp womp.)
