Becoming Eve: My Journey from Ultra-Orthodox Rabbi to Transgender Woman by Abby Chava Stein

dark emotional hopeful informative sad fast-paced

3.0

The author's story is fascinating, but I think the book should have been written 10 years later than it did. It remains somewhat superficial as if the author herself hasn't really made sense of what she went through. And this makes sense - she went through a uniquely cumbersome experience. But, as a result, the story is mostly a retelling of the facts. The ending especially is very abrupt - the author gets
married and divorced, which seems like a huge emotional event,
but it barely gets addressed. And that is just one example. I think time would provide a perspective that is necessary for the story's depth. As it stands, the book is OK, the insights into Jewish Orthodox customs are interesting, and I am glad the author is out and living, hopefully, her best life.
