I'm having a serious hit or miss issue with modern royals romance novels!! Ugh! And they usually are my favorite!
I had such high hopes for this book. It had all the elements I love, which is exactly why it isn't a 1 star read for me. The American falls in love with the British prince. I love the banter between Bex and Nick! It honestly made some of the slog worth it.
There are unfortunately so many things that didn't work for the book. One big thing is that the story was way too long. 450 pages was unnecessary. If some of the wordy parts were taken out, it would have been about 100 pages shorter and it would have made the book so much better.
Another issue was how quickly they fell in "love". Now some insta love I don't mind, but I need more from a couple. I don't feel Bex and Nick had anything other than surface love. There wasn't any deep meaningful conversations. I felt everything they did just stayed at the surface.
I found Bex to be very naive for what it meant to fall in love with a future king. Shebdid not at all take into account how it would be with paparazzi. She didnt listen to anyone, which is an issue I had with another modern royals book. But other than that, I actually liked her. She was pretty down to earth, and she made me laugh.
The biggest problem for me ended up being Nick. After the cute how they met portion of the book, he kind of became a dick. I felt so bad for Bex. She was trying to be so patient and understanding, but he just pushed her away. While yes she didn't listen to people, which is annoying, it's no excuse for how he treated her. He was going through a lot, but he should have brought her closer. They should have been working with each other and getting stronger. Leaning on the other for strength. But of course they did none of that because their relationship really didn't grow.
By the end of this book, I wish Bex had ended up with Freddie. He was actually there for her, let her vent, and was someone for her to lean on during all the craziness. He also for me was one of the best characters. I enjoyed his parts more than anyone else's.
Book had some great parts and banter and funny moments, but it didn't overshadow all that I didn't like.
