The Merciless Ones
by Namina Forna
Really good sequel that further explores the themes of the first book while adding on to them and making them more complex. However, the first beginning suffers from pacing issues because the author has a lot of lore to explain that they didn’t do in the last book which makes the beginning of the novel move at a break neck pace as so much information is dropped on the reader and they move to several new locations with many new characters. However, this did allow the rest of the book to move at a slower pace and really dive more into the implications of the lore and the weight of the choice Deka has to make. Also the twist were an alluded to a bit to heavily, but not all of them and didn’t ruin the message. Good read overall.
