Compelling  dialogue and heroes. More character development than you often see in fantasy but that’s what I expect from Brandon Sanderson.
The main character undergoes some really believable growth and while much of the supporting cast are really one dimensional seeing them through the eyes of a self absorbed hero (anti-hero?) and teenager it’s forgivable. We often perceive only one aspect of other people’s personalities. Especially when caught up in something intense.

The worldbuilding is great, the magic system interesting and different.

And I love that it’s a complete story. Will I be reading the next book in the series? Yes. But do I feel like I HAVE to in order to finish the story? Definitely not. Egressing for the genre.
