I’m not sure if I’m setting myself up for failure by attempting to do a review of “Little Women” by Louisa May Alcott, one of the most read and loved classic novels of all time! However, this is just the coziest book, I had the best time reading it, and I really wanted to share some of my thoughts with you.
Back in early 2020, I saw Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of “Little Women”, and I was absolutely mind blown! It not only had some actors that I really like, but it also explored some really interesting, themes. Since it was an adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s original work, I thought that perhaps, Gerwig had allowed a lot of creative freedom while writing the, to make it relevant to a 21st audience. I guessed that Alcott must have hinted at some of those themes in the original work, I just didn’t imagine how she did so in such a progressive way for the time period in which she wrote it!
I found myself getting fully immersed in the story from the very first sentence! The characters just felt so familiar, and as the story progressed, I began to increasingly care for them. I cared about their feelings, I was invested in their relationships…(not going to say a more about this, because SPOILERS, but there is a relationship that wast just so sweet, and I’m still not okay with it!)
Lastly, I just want to say that I LOVE Jo March! Jo is the driving force of the story, and in my opinion, the reason why “Little Women” continues to be relevant today. All March sisters are quite interesting to analyze, but Jo March is just something else entirely. She is a powerful character who refuses to accept the limits society forces upon her.
I believe my edition only has the first volume of “Little Women”, but I’m definitely interested in continuing with the rest of the story!!!
