The Murder at the Vicarage by Agatha Christie
3.75
mysterious tense medium-paced
Strong character development: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

My first Marple! It’s been a long time coming given that I was the biggest fan of the BBC adaptations as a kid.

Very cleverly constructed, I enjoyed this introduction to the village of St Mary Mead and its most famous spinster resident. I’ve never been very good at sleuthing out whodunit, so no surprise I couldn't manage it here, but I stand firm that I doubt many readers could figure out the murderer.

Lots of possible suspects (seven if you’re listening to Miss Marple, and you really ought to), make for constantly shifting possibilities. The thing is, I didn’t care much about any of the characters (beyond the vicar and his charming wife and Miss M of course). It’s more about the pleasure of the puzzle here I think.

I wish there had been more Marple! She is the most prominent secondary character and I was always looking out for her because she stole every scene she was in.

I will definitely want to continue with the next mysteries starring this legendary amateur spinster sleuth.
