The Painted Veil by W. Somerset Maugham

3.0

First of all:
Kitty! Girl, you need to sit the heck down!
I just couldn't with Kitty.
I know I was probably supposed cheer the growth of this main character, but really I was just done with her from the get-go.
I'm not even down on her so much for the extra-marital affair (although I was completely grossed out by Townsend) . Infidelity and cholera was the least of this woman's problems. This woman was irritating and racist and apparently in need of constant entertainment since her excuse for not liking people was being "bored" by them. Really, Kitty! What are you bringing to the table?!
She had an extremely inflated sense of self that just really grated on my nerves.
With all that said, I didn't HATE this story - just the main character.
The ending was definitely...well, it was an ending. No happy-times here, folks.
