The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
3.5
adventurous mysterious tense
Plot or Character Driven: Plot
Loveable characters: No

So, the cover had me believing this was some kind of fantasy, but it's not. So I kept waiting for the dystopian, magic, sci fi elements that never arrived, and my experience was a little anticlimactic overall. That said, I was interested in what happened to Avery. I wanted her to figure out the mystery and survive the year at Hawthorne House. Her devotion to her sister, Libby, was touching although her lack of connection with her friend Max was frustrating.

Listening to it was alright, but the danger with an audiobook for me is that I'll get too distracted at key moments. Sure enough, at the very moment when Avery was revealing the mystery, I was driving or thinking or something. And while I caught
the fact that Tobias Hawthorne Jr. was some kind of connected to Avery, I completely missed the endgame. The four brothers and Avery unlocked their locks, solved the anagram of Avery's name, and all got more letters. But... was that it? Even though I heard
most of the solution, I feel like I missed some vital pieces.

Unfortunately, the audiobook I borrowed has returned. I'll have to pick up the second book and see if things get explained.
