Thank you to The Nerd Fam for the gifted eARC.
Carrie was incredibly naive for someone who is queer, Black, a woman, and an expert in law… even if you don’t take into account the fact that her parents were lifelong activists.
There was a lot of telling, not showing, and moments that were supposed to be tense or shocking but had no build up so there was no pay off. The ending was as unsatisfying as the rest of the story for me.
Overall, I think this needed more work, more development, and Carrie’s growth needed to be believable. If she started from a solid but flawed foundation that aligned with her background and had a deeper awakening about injustice, it would have been a better story.
Every conversation was about two pages too short to be a believable meeting about constitution making or a police interrogation or whatever the topic of the chapter was. I felt as though too much of the “work” of the story was done off-page.
