adj1920 's review for:

Snow White, Blood Red by Ellen Datlow, Terri Windling
2.0

I first read this as a teen, along with the other fairy tale themed anthologies that Datlow and Windling put together. I remember them being pretty dark overall, and that some anthologies were less enjoyable than others. I grabbed this from my local Half Price Books and unfortunately, this was one of the weaker collections. The stories contain a disturbing amount of child abuse, molestation and sexual assault. And the editors' notes preceding each story seem to showcase a very glib attitude towards the material. It wouldn't be so bad if the sex and violence actually served the plot in a meaningful way (see: [b:Snow, Glass, Apples|45303582|Snow, Glass, Apples|Neil Gaiman|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1556223183l/45303582._SY75_.jpg|85497151]), or was hinted at off-page rather than described in painstaking detail.

The stories below are the ones I really enjoyed. They exemplified the theme and gave an adult perspective without the story being unnecessarily violent or sexual.
Like a Red, Red Rose by Susan Wade
The Moon is Drowning While I Sleep by Charles de Lint
The Springfield Swans by Caroline Stevermer and Ryan Edmonds
Troll Bridge by Neil Gaiman
The Snow Queen by Patricia A. McKillip
Breadcrumbs and Stones by Lisa Goldstein

These are the ones I would avoid due to sexual assualt etc:
Snow Drop by Tanith Lee
Little Red by Wendy Wheeler
I Shall Do Thee Mischief in the Wood by Kathe Koja
Little Poucet by Steve Rasnic Tem
Puss by Esther M. Friesner

The rest were either confusing, unremarkable, or would have been good except for weird sexual undertones that didn't quite cross the line into abuse. This is just a very uneven collection overall and unfortunately, the good stories weren't good enough save the overall experience of this book.
