The Rime of the Ancient Mariner
by Samuel Taylor Coleridge
I have nothing to say about Samuel Taylor Coleridge's The Rime of the Ancient Mariner that hasn't already been said by a thousand other commenters: this moody, lyrical narrative is a masterwork of English poetry. I especially enjoyed this edition for the inclusion of Willy Pogany's art deco illustrations. This was not the style I would first think of to complement Rime, but it works surprisingly well.
For a complete multimedia experience, after reading the poem on my own, I also reread it with accompanying narration from both Ian McKellen (~30 minutes) and Orson Welles (~40 minutes), which are available on YouTube. Both were phenomenal, and I highly recommend it for anyone contemplating revisiting Coleridge's most famous work. As a note, Coleridge produced at least 18 versions of Rime over his lifetime. The version in this Gramercy Books reprint matches the Welle's reading exactly, but not the McKellen reading.
