Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson
4.0

What if, as THE BOYS posits, being a superhero is very likely to corrupt you? And what if the superheroes decided they were gods who ought to be in charge, and they ruled by fear and fiat?
The human beings who answered back would be our heroes, eh?

Steelheart imagines such a world and a small cabal of revolutionaries who are working to fight against the "Epics," as they're called. This book is a rollicking good time, if a bit light. The main character, an eighteen or nineteen year-old man who has spent his whole life planning to fight against the Epics finds himself connected to them, and the adventure begins.

The least effective part of the book, for me, is the "perfect protagonist" at the heart of the story. He's good at just the right things and does just what he needs to do. He's annoyingly horny and bad at talking to 'girls,' but this feels more like an artifice put in to give him a way to grow more than a natural facet of the character.

That said, I enjoyed this book quite a bit and will check out some other Brandon Sanderson titles.
