Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb

adventurous emotional mysterious medium-paced

5.0

I often wonder why I love Hobb's series so much when I see so many readers who find it boring, slow, and tedious. But I think it's because no book or series have come close to replicating the feelings the Realm of the Elderlings do. I genuienly care for the characters, even the ones who are set against our main character. There's so many "what ifs" that are immediately crushed because this world isn't gaining new power or agency. Its about living with the lott life has given you. Or at least, is a story about how Fitz does this and never knowing he could do otherwise.

This is my third time reading the Assassin's Apprentice and on every read I find some extra hidden depth I didn't catch before. While Hobb's work is fantastic (some of my favourite ever), where it truly shines is upon reread. The emotional twists and turns are no less impactful, and in someways work more effectively with the knowledge we now hold as rereaders.

I'm so glad I decided to reread The Farseer Trilogy, as my plan is to continue with book 2 & 3
I have often wondered whether Hobb's work was loved by me only because of the time I read it in and on reread I'd find it lacking. That IS NOT the case and Hobb continues to be one of the best authors in fantasy for me.

In short:
Read her books!!!
